Almost one year has been completed to the flood which Pakistan has faced last year. Flood in year 2010 was the worst ever flood in the history of Pakistan. The devastating flood in Pakistan had destroyed more than half of the economy of the country. The country which was already facing several other crises including terrorism, poverty, financial crisis etc.The entire infrastructure including villages, roads, houses, water supply, agricultural lands, livestock as well as health and education facilities were merged into the flood. More than 20 million people were affected by the flood. More than 80 districts in all over Pakistan were damaged by the flood. According to the census there were more than 2000 casualties in flood affected areas. It raged from northern Khyber Pakhtunkhuwa to the heartlands of Punjab and from Punjab to the Sind province.

Almost one fifth of the country’s land was drowned into the flood water. We have to see that during last year, rehabilitation process has been completed or not. According to Red Cross society, food crisis is the big challenge for the flood affected people. About 150,000 people have been forced to move to higher ground as floodwaters from a freshly swollen Indus river submerged dozen more towns and villages in south Pakistan.

Role of Pakisran Army and Navy in this disaster by flood in pakistan can’t be denied. Pakistani forces responded very well in that need of hour. Rescue operations in flood affected areas were completed successfully.

A variety of mega projects were launched in the flood affected ares by many private institutions, donor agencies and government agencies for the purpose of rehabilitation and reconstruction during the past year. But it is the fact that millions of IDPs are still facing long term challenges.

A number of local and foreign institutions and organisations provided basic facilities to the vulnerable and affected people. It is the fact that donor agencies rescued very well in the flood affected areas but their main focus was on the early recovery and they did not focused on long term projects. That’s why still many people are at the risk from the flood this year. It was estimated that total expenditure on flood affected areas was in billions dollars.

The worst situation is in Sindh alone where many people are still living in the camps. There is no proper housing for more than 700,000 people, who have returned to their native cillages. There is a huge need for a coordinated and collaborative effort between the government and non-government agencies to build people’s resilience through such projects, as government is not responding very well and did not invested in the basic projects of health, roads etc and forcing foreighn agencies to do so.

Fresh rains lashed flood-hit Pakistan once again this moon sooon. Recent heavy rains in the northern parts of the country have put question mark on the riverbanks of rivers and canals.
